The New York Lottery team at McCann brought me on as a freelancer to redesign the New York Lottery’s PWA (Progressive Web App). The goal: shift from a focus on advertising and promotion, to mobility and utility.
User Testing
Since the existing site’s purpose was not utility focused, we decided to wipe the slate clean and test some new approaches to the site architecture and interaction model. We tested 12 low fidelity prototypes with multiple user groups to define the experience.
We had 3 versions of the home page:
Static long form scroll
Horizontal paging carousel
Multi-state button operated approach
And 2 versions of Navigation
pre expanded (all options revealed)
Category based (multi step)
Look and Feel
The existing brand for the Lottery had to be expanded since it was established primarily for print. I designed three look and feel options angled at giving the Lottery a modern, digital feel, while still giving a nod to its analog, retro history.
Design
Twenty five pages in 6 sprints. A core consideration for this site was that almost every piece of content was connected by CMS or API and had to be fully editable by lottery employees. As a result the design is largely modular and the layouts are fluid. Achieving a simple, fun look while displaying complex odds and information became the challenge.
